Pipe stems

The stems of the pipes received more respect than the bowls and were made with a hard wood tree, whose soft inside was either burned out with a hot wire or split in half and carefully glued back together (Furst and Furst 1982, 170-171). Women are responsible for decorating the pipe stems and use intricate details of quillwork and other methods.
