Smoking Up / Charles Marion Russell

Curatorial Remarks

This is the only sculpture for which Charles Russell sold the rights of reproduction. None of them were cast under his supervision. This bronze was probably cast posthumously (note the brace on the horse's left foot), but certainly before 1944, when Gilcrease purchased it from Philip G. Cole. The base was cast separately from the figure.

Information given by Ann Boulton Young, Associate Conservator for the Gilcrease Museum, 2018
