The model for The Cheyenne was created in 1901. This specific sculpture was probably created using an original bronze cast, not the artist's model, which would make it a fake.

Shenanigans at the Roman Bronze Works may have resulted in this unauthorized and poor quality cast. The small size indicates it may have been cast from a mold made from another bronze. It is also possible that it was made at another foundry where the Roman Bronze Works foundry mark was applied using individual letter stamps with the intent to deceive. Detail is lost in the moccasins and feathers and the hand/wrist articulation is poor compared to the other cast of The Cheyenne (0827.40). Ears of the horse and surrounding hair differ also. Compare foundry mark and detail to the other cast of The Cheyenne.

This bronze is marked as cast number 47. Although there is no date of sale for cast number 47 in the ledger, it is listed between two other bronzes that sold in 1917. However, it is doubtful that this is the original cast number 47. Gilcrease purchased it from the Douthitt Gallery.
